Key structural differences

Editorial overview of the companion structural comparison.

Whole Life Insurance and Private Placement Life Insurance are both permanent life insurance structures, but their investment architecture differs. Whole life generally combines contractual guarantees with potential dividends from a participating insurer; dividends are not guaranteed. PPLI uses separate-account investment options whose values fluctuate with their underlying investments. The choice therefore involves more than comparing a projected cash value or death benefit.

Cost comparisons should distinguish mortality charges, policy administration, investment-management expenses, and any surrender provisions. Whole life economics depend in part on the insurer's general-account results and dividend practices, while PPLI results depend on selected investments and policy charges. Guarantees are subject to the insurer's claims-paying ability. PPLI involves investment risk, including loss of principal, and is available only to investors meeting applicable eligibility requirements.

Access to cash value is another central difference. Policy loans and withdrawals affect available values and may reduce death benefits; borrowing is not free investment capital. Tax consequences depend on policy classification, funding, and whether the contract remains in force. The companion structural comparison addresses regulatory rules, liquidity, loan mechanics, and planning use cases. It is an educational reference, not a recommendation to replace an existing policy. A comparison should incorporate personal insurance needs and current tax and legal advice.

For educational purposes only; not individualized investment, tax, or legal advice. Investing involves risk, including loss of principal.
